What actually degrades THCa flower?
Four enemies, in order of damage done: air, light, heat and humidity swings. Oxygen slowly eats terpenes, which is where aroma and flavor live. UV light breaks down both terpenes and cannabinoids. Heat speeds up both processes, and a stash spot near a window or appliance can swing ten degrees in a day. Finally, humidity that is too low dries buds into dust, while humidity that is too high invites mold. Storage is really just the art of keeping those four enemies out of the jar.
The five rules of THCa storage
1. Airtight glass, always. A mason jar with a solid seal is the single best storage container you can own. Glass does not hold smells, does not shed static, and seals out air. Skip the plastic bag for anything you are keeping more than a few days: plastic is permeable, it lets air creep in, and it can leave a faint plastic note on your buds.
2. Cool and dark. A cabinet, a drawer, a closet shelf. Anywhere that stays room temperature or below and never sees direct sunlight. The back of a dark pantry is perfect.
3. Mind the humidity. Aim for 55 to 62 percent relative humidity inside the jar. Drop one in the jar and swap it every couple of months.
4. Do not grind until you are ready. Grinding multiplies the surface area exposed to air by an enormous amount. Whole buds hold their terpenes far longer. Grind what you are about to use, store the rest whole.
5. Minimize the opening. Every time you open the jar you exchange the stable inside air for fresh dry outside air. Open it, take what you need, close it. If you find yourself opening it many times a day, split your stash into a small daily jar and a large vault jar.
Should you store THCa flower in the fridge or freezer?
Skip both, with one exception. A refrigerator cycles its temperature and humidity every time the door opens, and condensation inside a jar is a mold risk. A freezer is worse for flower: trichomes, the frosty crystal layer where cannabinoids and terpenes concentrate, become brittle when frozen and snap off at the slightest touch.
